1. 🏰 Eger Castle

If Eger had to choose just one symbol, it would undoubtedly be Eger Castle. One of Hungary’s best-known historic sites is a must-see not only because of its impressive views, but also because it was the scene of the famous 1552 siege, which became an important part of Hungarian history.
Led by István Dobó, the defenders of the castle successfully resisted an Ottoman army many times larger than their own. Their heroic defence was made famous around the world by Géza Gárdonyi’s novel The Stars of Eger, making the castle one of the best-known historical sites in Hungary.
Several exhibitions can be visited inside the castle, including the István Dobó Castle Museum, the Casemates, the Hall of Heroes and the renovated Bishop’s Palace. The castle walls offer exceptional views over Eger’s historic centre and the hills of the Bükk Mountains.

2. 🏛️ Dobó István Square
If Eger has a true meeting place, it is undoubtedly Dobó István Square. Located in the heart of the Baroque city centre, the square is one of the liveliest parts of the city, with cosy terraces, cafés, restaurants, events and historic buildings all around it. Almost every walk through Eger starts or ends here.
In the centre of the square stands the equestrian statue of István Dobó, commemorating the heroic captain who led the defence of Eger Castle in 1552. The impressive statue is one of Eger’s best-known symbols and a favourite photo spot for visitors.
Many attractions can be reached within a few minutes’ walk from the square, including Eger Castle, Eger Basilica, the Lyceum and the charming Little Dobó Square. In summer, the terraces are full of life, the fountain offers a pleasant place to cool down, and the evening lights create a special atmosphere in the historic city centre.
The square also hosts many events throughout the year. Wine festivals, Christmas markets, concerts and cultural events make the centre of Eger even more lively. 3. ⛪ Eger Basilica
Eger Basilica, officially the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, is the second-largest church in Hungary. Its impressive size and Neoclassical architecture can be admired from a distance.
The monumental building was constructed between 1831 and 1836 based on the plans of József Hild. Its huge colonnade, impressive staircase and dome, which is almost 54 metres high, have become one of the best-known views of Eger. The exterior is worth a few minutes, but the interior is even more impressive.
Inside, visitors are welcomed by a spacious and bright church interior, where the decorated altar, detailed frescoes and Neoclassical architecture create a special atmosphere. The Basilica’s famous organ is one of Hungary’s most important church organs, and organ concerts are held here from time to time. If you have the chance to attend one, it can be a truly memorable experience.
The Basilica is not only a religious centre but also one of Eger’s most important historic buildings. Its location makes it easy to include in a walk through the city centre, as the Lyceum, Dobó István Square and even Eger Castle are all within easy reach.

4. 🎓 Lyceum and Camera Obscura
The Lyceum of Eszterházy Károly Catholic University is one of Eger’s most impressive Baroque buildings. It is a must-see not only for its architecture, but also for its unusual attractions.
The Lyceum was built in the 18th century as the vision of Bishop Károly Eszterházy, who wanted to create a modern university centre in Eger. Although the university could not be fully established at the time, the building remains one of the city’s most important cultural and educational centres.
The Lyceum’s best-known attraction is the Camera Obscura, Hungary’s only working periscope-based city-viewing system. A rotating mirror at the top of the tower projects a live image onto a table in a dark room, allowing visitors to see Eger’s city centre in a fascinating way. Although modern technology is now part of everyday life, this centuries-old optical device still amazes visitors.
Another highlight is the Archdiocesan Library, one of Hungary’s most beautiful historic libraries. The richly decorated room holds tens of thousands of old books, including rare manuscripts and special editions. Its ornate ceiling and classic library atmosphere make it one of the most beautiful interiors in Eger.

5. 🕌 Eger Minaret
Eger Minaret is one of the city’s best-known symbols and one of Hungary’s most unusual historic monuments. The almost 40-metre-high tower was built in the early 17th century during the Ottoman period and is considered one of the northernmost surviving minarets from the Ottoman era in Europe.
The slender tower, built from red sandstone, has been an important part of Eger’s skyline for centuries. According to legend, the muezzin once called the faithful to prayer from the top of the tower. Today, visitors climb it for the unforgettable views.
For those ready to climb the tower, the experience is truly special. The 97 narrow steps of the spiral staircase require some courage, but the view from the top is well worth the effort. From here you can see Eger Castle, the Baroque city centre, the dome of the Basilica and the surrounding hills.
The area around the Minaret is also pleasant to explore on foot. The charming streets, nearby Dobó István Square and Eger Castle make it easy to include in a full day of sightseeing.
Although the tower is narrow inside, the Minaret is one of Eger’s attractions that is well worth visiting at least once. It is special not only because of its historical importance, but also because so few similar monuments have survived in Central Europe.

6. 🌳 Archbishop’s Garden
Archbishop’s Garden is Eger’s green heart and a perfect place to slow down after a long day of sightseeing. Located on the edge of the city centre, this beautifully maintained park is a favourite place to relax for locals and a refreshing stop for visitors as well.
The wide, shady paths are perfect for a pleasant walk beneath centuries-old trees, while every season gives the park a different look. Flower beds come to life in spring, the trees provide cool shade in summer, and golden leaves cover the paths in autumn.
One of the most popular parts is the area around the ornamental lake, where visitors often sit on a blanket in the sunshine or enjoy a quiet picnic. Just a few metres away, the riverside path along the Eger Stream offers a calmer atmosphere, perfect for reading a book, going for a relaxed run or simply taking a break.
The music pavilion in the middle of the park adds a special touch to Archbishop’s Garden. It sometimes hosts small concerts, and street musicians occasionally fill the park with classical melodies. 7. 🛁 Eger Thermal and Beach Bath
Eger is famous not only for its historic sites and wines, but also for its thermal waters. Located in the heart of the city, Eger Thermal and Beach Bath is a special place where relaxation, recreation and nature come together.
The bath covers more than 5 hectares, and one of its greatest features is its beautiful park-like setting. The shade of the trees, green surroundings and pleasant paths mean that many visitors come not only to swim, but to spend an entire day relaxing.

8. 🛁 Turkish Bath
If you would like a truly special wellness experience, visit the Eger Turkish Bath. This historic bath is one of Hungary’s most unusual Ottoman-era monuments, combining centuries of history with modern wellness services.

9. 🍷 Valley of the Beautiful Woman
When people hear the name Eger, many immediately think of the Valley of the Beautiful Woman alongside Eger Castle. There is a good reason: this is the city’s best-known wine destination, filled with atmospheric cellars, wine bars and terraces.
Dozens of wineries welcome visitors in the valley, offering the region’s best-known wines, including Egri Bikavér and Egri Csillag. Whether you already know these wines well or are trying them for the first time, local winemakers are happy to tell you about the wines and the traditions behind them.
The valley feels different during the day and in the evening. During the day, the streets between the cellars invite you to take a relaxed walk, while in the evening the terraces come alive and it is easy to enjoy Eger’s hospitality over a glass of wine.

10. 🌍 Observatory and Magic Tower
The Magic Tower of Eszterházy Károly Catholic University is one of Eger’s most exciting attractions, bringing together science, astronomy and interactive exhibitions. Although many people visit the Lyceum for the Camera Obscura, it is worth making time for the rest of the Magic Tower as well.
The tower offers interesting things to discover on several levels. The interactive rooms introduce visitors to physics and astronomy, while playful displays make science easy and enjoyable to explore. The exhibitions are not only exciting for children – adults will find plenty of surprises too.
One of the most popular experiences is the observatory, where visitors can explore the night sky in clear weather. Modern telescopes offer a completely different way to discover stars and planets.
The Magic Tower is also a great choice in bad weather, but it can be a pleasant experience on a summer day as well. In the middle of the historic city centre, it offers a programme that is both entertaining and educational.

11. 📖 Géza Gárdonyi Memorial House
Few Hungarian writers are as closely connected to one city as Géza Gárdonyi is to Eger. The author of The Stars of Eger spent the last twenty years of his life here, in a quiet little house that is now open to visitors as a memorial museum.
The memorial house offers a glimpse into the writer’s everyday life. Visitors can see his original study, personal belongings, furniture, manuscripts and many other objects connected to his life and work. Many rooms have been restored based on their original furnishings, making it easy to imagine that the writer has simply stepped out for a short walk.
The friendly house surrounded by a garden has a completely different atmosphere from the busy city centre. Its peaceful setting fits perfectly with the world found in Gárdonyi’s works. Whether you have already read The Stars of Eger or are just discovering the writer’s life, the memorial house is an interesting and meaningful place to visit.

14. 🍬 Kopcsik Marzipan Museum and Bell Foundry House
